Seaglider Rescue!

Cruising Family Aids UW Ocean Tech Mission

A cruising family aboard the Pearson 424 Oatmeal Savage and two friends rescued a malfunctioning University of Washington Seaglider (named “Pigeon”) drifting in the Pacific after learning of its plight from a SAIL Magazine story.

The glider had gone off-course during a mission in the equatorial Pacific, suffering from a damaged rudder and battery failure that left it stuck at the surface. Despite the challenges of locating a small object at sea, the cruising crew coordinated with UW’s Student Seaglider Center, adjusted their route, and successfully retrieved the 120‑lb vehicle.

Upon recovery in Hawaii, UW engineers confirmed the rudder was broken and credited the students’ repair efforts and creative outreach (via publications and communications networks) for enabling the rescue.
